I’m always pushing preventive medicine: people can take strong lifestyle measures to literally stave off many diseases, including the biggies of heart disease and cancers. Now, the American Heart Association is seriously pushing prevention in a new campaign focusing on seven good habits. This is a nice shift from the typical emphasis on medicines and surgeries. They’re doing this mostly because of deep concern about the obesity epidemic, and they realize that throwing medicines at people isn’t getting to the root of the problem. The campaign is called Life’s Simple 7. Their seven steps are: get active; control cholesterol; eat better; manage blood pressure; lose weight; reduce blood sugar; and stop smoking. In fact, there’s growing evidence that indeed this is one vitamin that almost everyone may benefit from. I haven’t taken extra supplements of this before, but after reviewing the latest papers I’m seriously considering taking a special supplement. One of the most convincing angles was its apparent benefits in preventing cancers. Last year Medscape had a nice review of the multiple studies done over the past couple years. (Vitamin D Supplementation and Cancer Prevention) Many studies showed a drop in multiple cancers with higher levels of vitamin D intake. The reverse was also true; those with less vitamin D, especially those in nothern countries with less sunlight to create your natural vitamin D — had higher levels of many types of cancers. Here’s one synopsis: …Continue reading: Vitamin D: It’s The New Black…

I had a recent post about how challenging your mind can keep your brain healthy as you age. Well, I’ve taken it to heart, and I’ve started a brain exercise category to this website which will feature non-medical topics that are fascinating to read. For my first piece, I wanted to share a post on the highly literate China Beat blog, discussing a philosophical exchange about Reconciling Confucianism and Socialism. …Continue reading: Reconciling Confucianism and Socialism…
