Dr Richard Saint CyrAbout This Website

I am a U.S. board certified family medicine doctor working in Beijing since 2006. I currently see patients at Beijing United Family Hospital. I am also the former Group Director of Clinical Marketing and Communications for the United Family Hospital national chain of hospitals. I write a health column for the New York Times China edition and also have regular columns in Beijingkids magazine and the popular Chinese parenting magazine《母子健康》. I created this blog in the summer of 2009 to fill what I’d seen as an internet  information gap regarding health care issues for Beijingers. There are many blogs and websites about food, media, restaurants, etc — but precious little good information on health and wellness in China.

My focus is on preventive medicine and public health. I use evidence-based medicine as much as possible, and quote only reputable organizations (such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, World Health Organization, New England Journal of Medicine, New York Times, etc). This website, as of November 20, 2009 proudly passed peer-review certification by theHealth on the Net Foundation  and complies with the HONcode standard for trustworthy health information. About Me

I arrived here in 2006 from San Francisco, where I received my ABFP diploma in family medicine from UCSF Santa Rosa. I received my M.D. at Saint Louis University School of Medicine, and my bachelors degree in English literature from Columbia University. I have previously worked in rural community clinics, urgent care centers, and private clinics in California and Beijing. My main interests are adult primary care and chronic disease management, pediatric primary care, and diabetes. I have a Postbaccalaureate Diploma in Public Health from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine. When I have a free moment, I like to work on my fine art photography.

  1. Dear Doctor Richard:
I read some of your articles, found them actually really interesting. While most of them are in English only, which limits its audiences. Do you need a Chinese translator? If you do, I think I could offer help, without charge of course. Don’t hesitate to contact me if you felt like to!

  2. Dear Richard Saint Cyr,

I’m writing to you via this section of your blog because I couldn’t find the usual “contact us” on your website.( Maybe you would receive too many personal inquiries if you did so?).
Anyway, my wife and I moved to Taiyuan 2 months ago and reading your blog was like finding an oasis in the desert . Everything needed to improve our health was there 🙂
I didn’t leave any comment because I’m just a novice about air quality and copy/past “thank you” for each article I read wouldn’t be useful.
Basically, THANK YOU SO MUCH for everything you wrote about !
Please keep up the good work, you are definitely helping people way beyond your clinic in Beijing. Good luck for the future. King regards,

    Laurent

PS: do you have any French origin? Your family name sounds like a famous academy in France.

    1. Thanks so much! Yes I do receive a lot of emails so I’ve had to limit that a bit. But I appreciate everyone’s feedback and support. And yes I do have French-Canadian ancestry, thus the Saint Cyr “famous” last name. But I’m always embarrassed to tell French people I don’t speak any French…

Something to add or ask?
